Frank Gehry at LACMA

Organized by the Centre Pompidou, Musee National d’Art Moderne, Paris, this major retrospective (thru March 20) traces the trajectory of the L.A.-based Gehry’s designs dating back to the early ‘60s. Focusing on the themes “urbanism and the development of digital design and fabrication,” the exhibit is divided into six themes, and highlights more than 60 of Gehry’s projects as seen through 200 drawings and 66 models.

Gehry buildings are admittedly not what would normally be called tranquil, but they possess the ability to evoke the same sense of well-being.

Frank Gehry’s iconic architecture has transformed cityscapes all over the world (our own included, thanks to the Walt Disney Concert Hall). LACMA is honoring the LA-based architect with a career-spanning retrospective. Though Gehry’s creativity seems so effortless—The Simpsons lampooned his design process as simply crumpling up a piece of paper—there’s actually a considerable amount of technology behind his works. The exhibition focuses on the development of these digital design and fabrication programs, along with the architect’s relationship with urbanism.
